The father of missing teen Mariam Makhniashvili appeared in a Toronto court Saturday to face seven charges stemming from an alleged stabbing incident.

Police say the incident is not related to the disappearance of the teen, CTV Toronto's Jim Junkin reported.

Junkin added that an investigator said: "This event in no way advanced or hindered the search for Mariam Makhniashvili."

On Friday night, CTV Toronto reported that Vakhtang Makhniashvili was led handcuffed out of the apartment building where the family lives. The apartment is located near Bathurst Street and Eglinton Avenue.

During the court appearance, the elder Makhniashvili arrived with a bandage on his left hand. He will make his next court appearance on Monday and will remain in police custody until then.

According to a police news release, officers were called to an apartment building in the Eglinton Avenue West and Bathurst Street area around 7:45 p.m. At the building they found a 26-year-old man "suffering from obvious wounds."

Police allege that the suspect knocked on the victim's apartment door and forced his way in after the door was opened. Police also allege that the suspect then "began yelling and threatening the victim."

The victim was then stabbed, and the accused was held by guests of the victim until police arrived.

The victim was taken to Sunnybrook hospital. He has not been identified.

Toronto Police Sgt. Filippo Bevilacqua told ctvtoronto.ca Friday evening that the victim's injuries were not life-threatening.

The man in custody was also treated for non-life-threatening injuries to his hands.

Makhniashvili, 50, is charged with aggravated assault, forcible entry, assault with a weapon and four counts of threatening bodily harm.

Makniashvili's daughter, Mariam vanished last September from her Forest Hill neighbourhood and has not been seen since, despite a massive police search.

Some unconfirmed reports placed the 17-year-old student in Alberta, but those sightings were never corroborated.

Lela Tabidze, Makhniashvili's wife, declined to comment specifically on the stabbing. But she told reporters on Saturday outside of the court that the family remains focused on finding Mariam.
