The father of missing teen Mariam Makhniashvili has reportedly been taken into police custody after an alleged stabbing. The incident had nothing to do with the case of his missing daughter.
On Friday night, CTV Toronto reported that Vakhtang Makhniashvili was led handcuffed out of the apartment building where the family lives. The apartment is located near Bathurst Street and Eglinton Avenue.
The victim, who is a 26-year-old male, was stabbed in the stomach and was taken to Sunnybrook hospital. He has not been identified.
Police have yet to confirm the identity of the suspect and the victim. The relationship between the two men isn't known.
Toronto Police Sgt. Filippo Bevilacqua told ctvtoronto.ca that the victim's injuries were not life-threatening.
However, Bevilacqua declined to name the suspect in the case.
"We are not releasing that identity at this time," he added.
The man in custody was also being treated for non-lifethreatening injuries, Toronto Police spokesperson Wendy Drummond said.
No charges have been laid.
Mariam vanished last September from her Forest Hill neighbourhood and has not been seen since, despite a massive police search.
Some unconfirmed reports placed the 17-year-old student in Alberta, but those sightings were never corroborated.
