A 30-year-old man has been charged in connection to a string of bank robberies in Toronto.
Police have charged a suspect with 27 offences following an investigation into nine bank robberies that took place throughout the city's northwest end.
Their investigation began on Dec. 1 when a local bank was robbed but another bank robbery on March 15 led to them to a suspect.
Police say a man donning a ski mask entered a Bank of Montreal branch on St. Clair Avenue West near Dufferin Street Saturday at about 11 a.m. He was allegedly armed with a handgun.
Witnesses told police bank employees and customers handed over cash when they were threatened with the gun. Some customers who were in the bank foyer near the ATM machines were able to run outside and alert people to the situation inside the bank.
Their screams caught the attention of plainclothes officers in the area, police said.
Police officers confronted a suspect as he was leaving the bank.
The suspect allegedly pointed a gun at the officers. The officers fired a single shot but the suspect was not hit. However, police were able to take the suspect into custody at that point without further incident.
Police say all the missing cash has been recovered.
