TORONTO - A Liberal backbencher in the Ontario legislature wants the law changed to make it mandatory for anyone who suspects they've seen child pornography to report it to police.
Laurel Broten, a former environment minister, has introduced a private member's bill to make it a criminal offence not to report any image of child sexual exploitation.
Broten says she's always been active in protecting children, and feels it's her job to do whatever she can to fight the explosion of online pornography involving kids.
She says the bill takes away any confusion about whether to report suspected child pornography and will let police determine if the images are considered illegal.
Both the Conservatives and New Democrats say they want to see the details, but expect they will support Broten's bill.
However, NDP justice critic Peter Kormos says it's clear Broten wants to use the bill to raise her own profile around the legislature after being dropped from cabinet last fall.
