OTTAWA - New Democrat Leader Howard Hampton says he would shift the province toward a "greener'' energy supply that would fulfil Ontario's power needs.
Hampton outlined the NDP's plan Sunday morning at a campaign stop in Ottawa, which includes phasing out coal plants and banning any new nuclear facilities from opening.
The NDP Leader called for a "significant'' boost in clean, renewable power sources such as wind, solar and water power.
He also took a shot at the Liberal government for what he termed a "$40 billion nuclear megascheme.''
But the Liberals say the true cost of nuclear power under their 20-year electricity plan is only $26.5 billion.
Energy Minister Dwight Duncan defended the Liberals' energy plan, saying it would generate the "largest investment in energy conservation, energy efficiency and renewables in the history of our province.''
Duncan says the Liberals would double the amount of renewable power sources over the next 20 years.
