TORONTO - New Democrat Leader Howard Hampton is trying to win over female voters today by highlighting gender inequality in Ontario.
Hampton spoke to about 800 people at the Woman Vote 2007 conference in Toronto and shocked some members of the crowd when he brought up the average Ontario woman's salary.
He says it's only $25,600, which is not enough to raise a family on.
He is trying to appeal to the female voting base with his pledge to raise the minimum wage, immediately, to $10 an hour.
Hampton also says that eliminating the health tax for low-income workers would make a big difference for single mothers.
Hampton says he's proud that the New Democrats are fielding 42 female candidates in this election, which is more than the other parties.
