The city took over clean-up efforts at the Sunrise Propane site Friday, as Mayor David Miller claimed that company officials have not acted quickly enough to ensure the safety of the area.
Sunrise officials have not responded to a city order issued on Aug. 13 to clean up the site of the massive propane explosion, Miller said.
The mayor also claimed the company has not responded to a Ministry of the Environment order to devise a strategy to secure the site, control dust and other debris and monitor air quality.
"The province has not received assurance from the company that the Sunrise site would quickly be cleaned up. Accordingly, the city has stepped in and commenced the clean up, effective this morning," Miller told reporters Friday.
CTV.ca attempted to reach officials at Sunrise Propane to respond to Miller's claims. However, telephone calls went unanswered.
Toronto firefighters have been at the scene since the blast on Aug. 10 that forced the evacuation of thousands of residents.
Fire crews have been keeping watch over the remaining propane cylinders, which the company was asked to secure and remove.
A week ago, the city took over clean-up efforts in the neighbourhood that surrounds the facility.
That effort cost the city about $1.5 million and the site clean up could significantly add to that total.
Miller told reporters he would investigate ways to recoup that money from the company.
The cause of the explosion and fire at the propane site is not yet known. The fire marshal's investigation is complete, but the findings have not yet been made public.
