TORONTO - Premier Dalton McGuinty says it's "not helpful at all" to have a militia in Caledonia where aboriginal protesters have occupied disputed land for more than three years.

He suggests the militia could cause problems for provincial police in the southwestern Ontario town, which has seen violent clashes between homeowners and protesters.

McGuinty says it's the OPP's responsibility to uphold the law and an overwhelming majority of Ontario residents think it's important to support them.

His comments come after two activists held a meeting Tuesday night to form a group called the "Caledonia Peacekeepers."

Doug Fleming and Gary McHale say the group would protect homeowners from trespassers and use reasonable force if necessary.

The meeting drew about 30 local residents and sparked a protest by about 70 demonstrators.

Fleming and McHale say they want the group to put pressure on police to enforce problems in the area occupied by aboriginal protesters.
