Toronto police say that human remains encased in concrete have been discovered in Lake Ontario. The concrete and the body are inside a barrel.
Forensic investigators are currently on the scene, which is about 100 metres offshore near Lower Jarvis Street and Queens Quay.
Police arrived on the scene at around noon, and shortly afterward, the marine unit pulled a rusty barrel out of the water. Officers say that mud and concrete are inside the steel drum, along with the remains of an unidentified person.
Police told reporters at the scene that it is obviously a homicide. It isn't clear, however, how long the barrel was submerged.
Officers at the scene told reporters that it would take at least a day or two before the cause of death and the person's identity could be discovered.
Police have not said how the barrel was discovered.
However, the crime scene is located near the Redpath Sugar plant on Queens Quay East. In recent months, construction crews have been working in the area to build a new city park.
Meanwhile, CTV Toronto's Jim Junkin reported that security officials have been sweeping through the area in preparation for the G20 Summit next month.
