The embattled principal of Canada's only Africentric school is expected to return to work, after taking a leave following a parental complaint, the Toronto District School Board said on Friday.
Thando Hyman went on a personal leave from the Africentric Alternative School late last month after a parent complained that she had mistreated her son.
Parents were informed at a meeting with TDSB officials Thursday night that an investigation into the complaint had been completed and that Hyman would return to her position.
A TDSB spokesperson could not say whether Hyman's return would be any time soon.
The parent who raised the complaint did not attend the meeting, the spokesperson said.
Hyman is a popular principal who was picked to lead the Africentric school when it opened last year.
She was previously the principal at General Brock Public School in Scarborough, Ont. and has over 15 years of teaching and administrative experience with the school board.
She has been temporarily replaced by a retired principal who is white.
The school opened in an attempt to reduce dropout rates among the city's black students.
While most of the teachers are black, in the hopes they will serve as role models for black students, the school is open to students of all backgrounds.
