TORONTO - The principal of Canada's only Africentric school has been temporarily replaced by a retired principal who is white.
The Toronto District School Board says Thando Hyman has taken a leave of absence for personal reasons.
She is being replaced by George Brown Jr., a former principal at Crestview Public School.
The school board couldn't say when Hyman will return and would not comment on the circumstances of her absence.
The Africentric school opened last year in an attempt to reduce dropout rates among the city's black students.
Most of the teachers are black, in the hopes they will serve as role models for black students.
The school is open to students of all backgrounds.
