TORONTO - Tax season will be more important than ever this year.

That's because a 2009 tax return is needed to collect a government payment to offset the effects of Ontario's coming harmonized sales tax.

The HST will come in effect July 1 and increase the price of some goods and services in the province.

But the provincial government is also offering some payments to ease the transition for lower income Ontarians.

They are only available to people who file a 2009 return.

The payments are a temporary measure of up to $1,000 for families

with annual incomes below $160,000, and $300 for individuals with annual incomes below $80,000.
