TORONTO -- Environment Canada says the province's 17th and likely also its 18th tornadoes of the season touched down earlier this month north of Barrie.

The weather service says it's confirmed the 17th tornado touched down in Ramara Township during severe thunderstorms in the region on Sept. 5.

It says the tornado had winds of 135 to 175 km/h.

And it says discussions with Beausoleil First Nation has led Environment Canada to believe a "probable" twister also touched down earlier that day and caused damage on nearby Christian Island in Georgian Bay.

Environment Canada says Ontario averages 12 tornadoes during the usual April to October twister season.

It has said 23 tornadoes touched down in the province last year.
