Environment Canada is investigating reports of a possible tornado that touched down north of Orillia, Ont., Friday afternoon.

The possible twister was spotted near Six Mile Lake, in the Port Severn area shortly after 2 p.m.

"We have eye witness reports suggesting that hundreds of trees have come down in that area and some power lines as well," Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson said.

Port Severn and its surrounding region were under a severe thunderstorm warning at the time of the reported tornado.

Coulson said that the storm system has since moved southeast of the area and is affecting the northern parts of York and Durham Regions.

"Keep a close eye on the sky and if threatening weather does approach your location, make sure you are able to get into a well-built structure."
