A 13-year-old girl is dead after being struck by a car Friday night in Mississauga.

Peel Regional Police said the girl was standing on the sidewalk near Bloor Street East and Havenwood Drive shortly before 8:30 p.m., when she was struck by a 2002 Chevrolet Impala.

"On police arrival, the female was found in the field area behind the vehicle," Peel police Const. Fiona Thivierge told CP24 at the scene. "She had been knocked through a fence."

Police said the girl was taken to hospital where she died of her injuries a short time later.

"The 13-year-old girl has very devastatingly succumbed to her injuries," Thivierge said. She said the girl’s family has been notified.

Police said the 42-year-old driver of the vehicle was not injured, but was taken to hospital and treated for shock.

Investigators from the Major Collision Bureau are looking for witnesses who may have seen the fatal collision.
