Toronto police say three men are facing stunt-driving charges after three separate high-speed incidents on city highways over the weekend.
A 37-year-old Toronto man was charged early Monday after police say he was spotted travelling 188 km/h in 100 km/h zone on the Gardiner Expressway. Police say the incident happened at 2:05 a.m. as officers observed a 2003 Audi A4 driving westbound on the Gardiner near Islington Avenue.
The man has been charged with one count of speeding and one count of stunt driving. His licence has been suspended for seven days -- the same length of time his car will remain impounded.
Early Sunday, another 22-year-old man was also charged when a 2013 Kia Forte was found to be going 144 km/h while headed northbound on the Don Valley Parkway, which is a 90 km/h zone.
That man, from Pickering, was charged with both stunt driving and speeding, as well as driving while under suspension and refusing to provide a breath sample. His licence has been suspended for 90 days.
He was stopped just minutes after police stopped a vehicle that had been travelling at 113 km/h in a 60 km/h stretch of Lakeshore Boulevard. A 25-year-old faces charges of stunt- and impaired driving.
In addition to having their vehicles seized, both the 22-year-old and 25-year-old men were handed 90-day licence suspensions.
"You decide your speed, physics decides whether you live or die. Do your part to keep our roadways safe," Const. Clint Stibbe, of Toronto’s Traffic Services, said in a statement.
In 2012 alone, Toronto Police issued 381 licence suspensions for either speeding or stunt driving.
