The mother of a 16-year-old boy shot dead on the doorstep of his north Toronto home on the weekend came together with her son's friends on Monday to grieve their loss.
"God it hurts, it hurts so badly," Sandra Campbell told reporters, breaking down in tears. "Words cannot explain the pain."
Her boy Keyon was killed after being shot early Sunday morning. He had just come back inside from warming up his mother's car when he was hit while standing in the doorway of his Empringham Drive home, near Finch and Morningside Avenues.
"As I sat on the couch, all I heard was bap, bap, bap, bap ... and he dropped in the doorway," Campbell said.
The teen was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He became the city's 80th homicide of the year.
Police described Keyon as a bright and hard-working student who may have been the victim of mistaken identity. Investigators said the teen was not in a gang, but because he lived in a small neighbourhood, he could have had friends in gangs.
Keyon had a part-time job and played on the basketball team at Mother Theresa Catholic Secondary School.
His mother would regularly attend the school to watch her son's games, but she instead visited the facility on Monday for a private service in the school chapel.
Campbell said her son had plans to attend Centennial College for business and mechanics, and he one day hoped to open a car dealership.
She is urging her son's killer to do the right thing and surrender.
"I know right now you can't live with yourself for what you did," Campbell said.
Police said some witnesses have come forward, but investigators say they need others to speak to them.
