Highway 401 in Toronto's east end came to a standstill during the busy morning commute on Friday after a female pedestrian was struck and killed.
The woman leapt from the Don Mills Road overpass onto the highway at about 6 a.m., but survived the fall, OPP media relations officer Const. Graham Williamson told CTV.ca.
The woman, believed to be 20 years old, then ran into traffic and was killed.
"At least two vehicles struck the victim," Williamson said, adding the first was a tractor-trailer and the second vehicle was believed to be a car.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Early indications show that it probably was intentional," Williamson said.
"Determining whether or not it was an actual suicide or anything else, that's part of our investigation and we haven't drawn any conclusive results yet."
The highway wasn't reopened until about 9 a.m.
The victim's name has not been released.
