Dozens of north-end Toronto residents are without water Monday after a watermain ruptured in their neighbourhood overnight, officials said.

Roughly 10 houses and six triplexes, between Yonge Street and Leith Place along Lawrence Avenue, may be without water until late Monday afternoon, Joe Di Leo of Toronto Water told ctvtoronto.ca.

Repairs crews were forced to shut off the taps after a 150-milllimetre pipe burst underneath Lawrence Avenue just east of Yonge Street sometime before 2 a.m. on Monday.

Repairs began just after 6 a.m., once hydro, gas and Bell and Toronto Water crews arrived on-scene, Di Leo said.

Crews cleaning up the pooled water and repairing broken pipe forced the closure of all but one westbound lane along Lawrence Avenue.

Eastbound traffic is not affected, Di Leo said.

All westbound Lawrence Avenue lanes are expected to re-open Tuesday once a final coat of asphalt is laid over the repair site -- providing the weather co-operates, Di Leo said.

Broken watermains are common when the temperature changes suddenly, Di Leo said, adding Monday's broken pipe is a relatively small one.

Older pipes are more prone to snapping as well, Di Leo said.
