Coun. Adam Giambrone let another clue slip that he will be announcing a run for mayor on Monday.
Some people associated with Spacing magazine posted a message to Twitter, the social messaging service, linking to a spoofy YouTube video posted by "AdamGiambrone2010."
In it, Giambrone (Ward 18, Davenport) appears to be training for a mayoral run. The election takes place on Oct. 25.
"Mayors aren't made in a day," says a voiceover as the councillor does calisthenics in a business suit. "It takes years of physical and mental training to prove you have what it takes to run a city."
At one point, the offscreen announcer says, "A successful candidate must have a memorable prop they can be associated with." Giambrone had a broom over his head. "No it's been done," he said, tossing it away.
Current Mayor David Miller, who won't be running for re-election, used a broom as a symbol of his desire to clean up City Hall in his successful run for mayor in 2003.
Giambrone would likely been seen as continuing much of Miller's legacy, such as Transit City.
One test slogan Giambrone uses is, "It's Transit City, stupid" -- a play on "It's the economy, stupid" mantra of U.S. President Bill Clinton in 1992.
Giambrone has booked an event at the Revival nightclub on College Street for Monday night. At the beginning of this week, an invitation to that event leaked out, first posted to Twitter by the Torontoist website.
Some other major candidates for mayor include:
- former deputy premier George Smitherman
- former Liberal party national director Rocco Rossi
- deputy mayor Joe Pantalone (Ward 19, Trinity-Spadina)
- Coun. Georgio Mammoliti (Ward 7, York West)
