A TTC manager has been let go after getting a TTC contractor to hire his female friend to do a $50,000-per-year job.

The TTC confirmed Tuesday that project manager John Cursio is no longer an employee.

"It is a condition of employment that you adhere to the conflict of interest policy. When you have one individual who does not adhere to the policy it makes it very difficult for organizations like the TTC to manage those," TTC spokesperson Brad Ross told CTV Toronto on Tuesday.

Cursio is alleged to have recommended that Aecom, a company doing design and consulting work for the TTC, hire Robin Thoen, his longtime female companion.

Thoen, who has a company called West Point Photography, then got hired for the job.

Ross said that not only did Cursio recommend Thoen, he approved the payments that were made to her over a nearly two-year period.

"We'll acknowledge that there was a conflict of interest … that conflict should have been declared," Ross said.

The commission is now reviewing other contracts that Cursio oversaw.

"We're also in the process of reminding all of our employees, once again, about our conflict of interest policy, which is very detailed," he said. "What we are also going to be doing, however, is reviewing the processes related to the conflict of interest policy to see where we might be able to strengthen them."

Neither Cursio or Thoen could be reached for comment.
