A newspaper in Trinidad and Tobago is reporting that police there suspect they have broken up a drug ring that was allegedly trying to move cocaine from that country to Canada.
Acting on a tip, officers intercepted a car on Friday. Inside it, they found a suitcase containing nine kilograms of cocaine, the Guardian reported Saturday.
The newspaper alleged that the suspect was to meet with contacts at Piarco International Airport and have the suitcase shipped to someone living at a Canadian address.
The suitcase was to arrive at Toronto's Pearson International Airport. Once there, airline employees would have taken control of the suitcase and shipped it onward.
Ctvtoronto.ca attempted to reach the RCMP for comment on Saturday, but has so far been unsuccessful.
The newspaper reports that law enforcement officials in Trinidad and Tobago have ongoing surveillance operations at Piarco.
A number of airport employees there have been dismissed following allegations they assisted drug dealers in placing narcotics on aircraft, it said.
Earlier this week, the RCMP did announce the arrest of five individuals in connection with an alleged operation to export drugs from Canada to Australia.
"These arrests and the dismantling of a sophisticated criminal exportation network are a significant blow in eradicating Canada as a transnational drug-trafficking hub," the RCMP said in a news release issued Thursday.
The operation was allegedly shipping methamphetamine, ecstasy pills and cocaine to Australia.
