Parking in Toronto could soon become somewhat less stressful as council is poised to tell the city’s "Blue Hornets" not the issue tickets until a 10-minute grace period has passed.
On Monday, the city’s Government Management Committee requested that the police services board amend the parking guideline to stop tickets from being issued until the 10-minute grace period has passed.
The move – which must be approved by city council – would end the bizarre situation where the city will cancel a parking ticket if you received it within 10 minutes of your paid parking expiring.
Some Toronto councillors recently criticized the policy, saying the city does little to advertise the grace period.
In 2012, the City of Toronto issued 2,761,802 parking tickets worth about $80 million.
The largest amount of tickets were issued under “Expired Meter” offences or “No Parking” categories, which represented 42 per cent of all parking tickets issued last year.
