A Toronto police officer is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a collision in the city’s west end Saturday afternoon.
The collision happened near Bloor Street West and Neilson Drive, just west of Highway 427, shortly before 4 p.m.
The officer has been identified as 34-year-old Const. John Zivcic.
Deputy Chief Peter Sloly told reporters that Zivcic is “an up-and-coming” officer who has been with the force since August 2007.
Sloly said the officer has undergone multiple surgeries but remains in critical condition at St. Michael's Hospital.
Mike McCormack, president of the Toronto Police Association, told reporters outside the hospital that Zivcic is a “well-respected, hardworking police officer.”
"Our concerns are with the family right now," McCormack added. "We're here to support the family through this terribly, terribly difficult time."
Paramedics said the female driver of a second vehicle was also transported to hospital with minor injuries.
The cause of the collision was not immediately clear. A collision reconstruction team was on scene late Saturday.
Sloly said Zivcic was working alone at the time of the accident.
