TORONTO - Toronto FC re-signed diminutive forward Joao Plata to a multi-year deal Wednesday.
The five-foot-two Plata was one of the bright spots for TFC in 2011, scoring three goals and adding five assists in 26 Major League Soccer games.
"We are very happy to get this deal completed and keep Plata at our club," Toronto FC coach Aron Winter said in a statement. "Plata had a great year with us in 2011. He made a strong contribution on the pitch.
"Re-signing Plata was a high priority for our club during the off-season. I have to compliment everyone involved for making this a reality. Plata wanted to remain in Toronto and we wanted to keep him. We know our fans will be happy with this announcement."
The 19-year-old Ecuadorian made his first-ever start for Toronto FC in April, contributing two assists in a 3-0 victory over FC Edmonton in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship. Plata made four appearances in the tournament, scoring one goal and adding three assists to be named the competition's MVP.
He was also critical in Toronto's CONCACAF Champions League campaign, scoring four goals and adding one assist in five games.
