A Toronto police officer is facing criminal charges after his cruiser collided with a car late last year.
Peter Eckersall was charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm Friday after a Special Investigations Unit probe into the accident.
The SIU said in a statement the officer's car was traveling westbound on Ellesmere road responding to a 911 weapons call on October 5, 2006 when it crashed into a vehicle driving the opposite direction.
The 40-year-old female driving the other car suffered multiple fractures. The passenger, the woman's 10-year-old daughter, wasn't injured.
Based on evidence from the investigation the SIU concluded that there were reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence.
Eckersall is slated to appear in court on July 20.
The SIU is a civilian government agency that investigates circumstances involving police and civilians, which have resulted in serious injury or death.
