Residents in an east-end neighbourhood are frightened after a suspected arsonist is believed to have caused two house fires on the same street this week.

The owner of the home at 63 Sonmore Dr., near Sheppard and Midland avenues, awoke Friday morning to the sound of a crackling fire outside her front door.

Flames quickly spread up the front of the house and onto the roof, but the mother and her five-year-old daughter were able to escape without injury.

The home was nearly destroyed, CTV's Jim Junkin reported from the scene.

This is the second such incident on the street in four days.

On Monday, the house across the road was torched. No one was hurt in that incident.

Police believe an arsonist set both fires.

Residents say they fear for their safety.

"I'm a nervous wreck, I didn't sleep at all," said Gina Costa. "It's terrifying. We never expected in this neighbourhood for something like that to happen."

"I was shocked -- it's getting too close for comfort," added Irene Hartley.

"Somebody said they thought they saw an older man running in between the houses with a can of something."

No information about the suspect has been released.
