A major industrial fire in Brampton shut down a stretch of Highway 407 on Monday morning as thick, black smoke billowed over the highway and caused visibility problems for drivers.

The fire broke out at Triple M Metal recycling plant on Intermodal Drive, near Airport Road and Highway 407, at about 5 a.m., Peel police said.

Police believe all workers who were inside the building when the blaze erupted escaped without injury.

The thick smoke caused Ontario Provincial Police to close Highway 407 in both directions between Highway 410 and Highway 427.

The highway reopened several hours later, after 8 a.m.

The smoke billowed into the skies near Pearson International Airport, but flights were not affected.

It is not yet clear whether any hazardous materials were involved in the fire.

No injuries were reported.

Ministry of the Environment officials are expected to test the scene for any potential health hazards.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
