The province's Special Investigations Unit is probing the shooting of a man by Toronto police in Regent Park on Monday night.

Residents said they heard several loud bangs at the intersection of Dundas Street East and River Street at about 10 p.m.

Police shot the 33-year-old man following a vehicle pursuit on downtown streets. The chase ended when the fleeing white Honda Civic crashed into a police cruiser and a TTC bus shelter at the intersection.

While officers were arresting the driver, there was an altercation and the suspect was shot twice in the neck, police said.

The man was taken to St. Michael's Hospital.  He is listed in serious condition but stable condition.

The victim's identity has not been released.
