Ontario's Special Investigation Unit is probing the death of a man shot outside an Oakville, Ont. police station while local officers investigate the death of his estranged wife.
Ontario's SIU said on Friday that the man fatally shot outside the station at 95 Oak Walk Dr. was Kyle Newman, 43, of Oakville.
According to the SIU, Newman was seen causing damage in the parking lot at about 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. Officers went outside to intercept the individual and had an "interaction" that ended with the man being shot.
Witnesses who live near the police station reported hearing between five and 10 shots.
A release issued by Halton Regional Police said that no officers were harmed.
The SIU has assigned a team of 10 investigators to probe the circumstances behind the shooting and have noted two officers as the subject of their investigation.
The SIU said they will be speaking with another eight officers who they believe witnessed the shooting.
Meanwhile, Halton police are investigating the suspicious death of a woman which appears to have happened shortly before the incident at the police station.
A woman was found dead in her home, located about six kilometres from the police station at 1151 Treetop Terrace, near Fourth Line and Westoak Trail Blvd in Oakville.
Police say they received a phone call from a woman reporting that she found another woman's body in the home.
The woman was identified as Katherine Newman, 43, of Oakville.
CTV Toronto's Zuraidah Alman reported that Kyle was Katherine's estranged husband and that the couple's three young boys were staying with family members.
Police also confirmed the couple's relationship and said the woman died of "multiple stab wounds."
Neighbours say Kyle Newman moved last summer to a house around the corner from where Katherine Newman lived with their children. He was often seen playing outside the house with his boys.
Police and forensic teams continued to search his home on Friday, but were still not connecting the two investigations.
"The matter is under investigation by members of the homicide unit. Neighbours were canvassed last evening and it is a homicide investigation," Sgt. Dave Cross told CTV Toronto.
Katherine Newman is the daughter of a prominent Hamilton, Ont. family, and she moved into the home earlier this year with her three children.
