A 48-year-old man is in hospital after being injured in a police-involved shooting in Newmarket early Tuesday morning.
Police responded to a call that a man had been seen firing a gun near an apartment building on Davis Drive near Lorne Avenue, shortly after midnight.
Officers said that they were confronted by a man with a gun when they arrived. When the man advanced on them, officers discharged their firearms.
"(The police officers) were actually confronted by a man who was armed with a gun," Sgt. Clint Whitney told reporters on Tuesday. "During this encounter the man advanced on the police officers, the police officers discharged their firearms and shot the man."
A handgun was found at the scene of the shooting. Bullets from that firearm had smashed through the second-floor window of an apartment building where an 88-year-old woman has lived for 10 years.
"There were three terrific shots,” Gerry Sterling told CTV Toronto, adding that she is thankful the shooting didn't happen during the daytime, when she is usually sitting by her window. "These things happen but I’m just glad it wasn't any more serious."
Witnesses at the scene described hearing two or three gunshots after someone shouted at the man to put his gun down.
"I heard one shot and there was a hesitation and after the hesitation there were five more shots, (one) right after each other," Barbara Chuback told CTV Toronto.
The man is at Sunnybrook Hospital suffering from gunshot wounds. No police officers were injured in the incident.
The Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The police watchdog is called in to investigate whenever police are involved in a serious death or shooting.
