A little girl had to have surgery on her leg after she was bitten by her neighbour's dog.

Four children were playing outside their Scarborough homes, throwing berries at each other. An argument broke out and an 11-year-old boy went home to get his dog. He let the dog loose outside.

The dog, a German sheppard-Irish wolfhound, chased the children.  He managed to catch up with the eight-year-old girl, biting her on the thigh. The dog stopped the attack when the boy gave the command.

The girl was not seriously hurt but she remains in hospital for observation.

Police say no charges will be laid. However, the dog, who has a history of biting people, may be put down if the girl's parents request it
