A west-end Toronto school has been told to keep students inside as police and animal control officers search for dogs that attacked and killed two cats early Thursday morning.

Shirley Street Public School kept students inside during recess as a precaution. The dogs, described as being very large, were seen growling and salivating while baring their teeth.

Police said they received a call when neighbours saw the roaming dogs.

"We had a couple of dogs that ran wild this morning in the area here near Shirley Public School and when they went out a couple of neighbours here called because they were startled by the dogs," police Sgt. Jeff Zammit said.

He described the dogs as reaching "up to my waist."

"We were able to corral one of them in a backyard in the area, salivating and his teeth were out."

Police also found two dead cats in the area and they believe the dogs are responsible for the feline deaths.

Officers were still searching for the other dog late Thursday morning.

The search area included Dundas St. W. in the north and Queen St. W. to the south between Lansdowne Ave. and Dufferin St.
