A driver has been charged after a woman walking on the westbound lanes of Highway 401 in Toronto was struck and killed on Saturday.
The OPP said that the incident occurred around 1 a.m. just east of Martin Grove Road.
The woman was struck multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police told CTV Toronto on Saturday that they believe she might have stepped out of a taxi.
"She was not in a vehicle or associated to a vehicle at the time of the crash," OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford said. "There was a driver who struck her. We are interviewing him."
The woman was first struck by a minivan and the driver of that vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries. She was then struck by other vehicles.
Police said the driver of the minivan was arrested for impaired driving causing death and driving with over 80 milligrams of alcohol causing death.
The woman's identity has not yet been released.
