Ontario's English Catholic school teachers could be in a position to strike by mid-August.

The Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA) has requested a "no-board" report, CTV Toronto's Naomi Parness has learned.

Talks between teachers and the government are in progress, but teachers would be in a legal strike position next month.

A no-board is issued by the Ministry of Education when negotiating parties' differences are too great for conciliation. The notice informs the union and employer that the conciliation officer does not consider it advisable to appoint a conciliation board.

Following a no-board report, the ministry assigns a third-party mediator to work with the employer and the union to reach a collective agreement.

The OECTA filed for conciliation at the end of June, paving the way for a possible strike this fall. In a statement, the union said it had been unable to secure a "fair and equitable" deal for its members.

The union represents 50,000 teachers, who have been without a contract for approximately a year.
