WINDSOR, Ont. - Closing arguments are scheduled to begin today in Windsor, Ont., at the trial of a man accused of killing a city police officer.
Twenty-year-old Nikkolas Brennan is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Const. John Atkinson in May 2006.
Atkinson, who was the first officer slain in the line of duty in the more than 120-year history of the city's police force, was shot outside a variety store.
The Crown wrapped up its case last Thursday after calling 17 witnesses to the stand. The defence rested without calling any witnesses.
Brennan has claimed he did not know that Atkinson, who was on duty in plain clothes, was a police officer, and that he fired his gun in self-defence
But jurors heard a tape recorded in a segregation cell in which Brennan says he did see Atkinson's badge.
