TORONTO - Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty is adding his voice to those demanding that Canada live up to its Kyoto commitments to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
The Canadian Press has obtained a copy of a letter McGuinty sent Friday to Prime Minister Stephen Harper severely criticizing the Conservative government for its approach on climate change.
McGuinty accuses Harper of ignoring the latest scientific evidence on global warming, and says Ottawa's approach will "see Canada's emissions increase, not decrease.''
The letter was timed to coincide with federal Environment Minister John Baird's arrival at the United Nations conference on climate change in Bali, Indonesia.
McGuinty says the conference is a chance for Canada to demonstrate its role as a world leader by adopting "deep and absolute emission reductions.''
Baird says McGuinty's plan to close Ontario coal plants only to import more coal-generated power from Michigan won't reduce greenhouse gases, but will cost the province jobs.
