A 37-year-old man is in serious condition in hospital after his car was crushed in a collision with a streetcar.

Firefighters worked for almost an hour to free the driver from the wreckage.

The crash happened on St. Clair Avenue West near Dufferin Street around 3 p.m. Sunday.

Toronto Police Staff Sgt. Devin Kealey told CTV News the impact of the crash pushed the car several metres.

The driver's side of the car bore the brunt of the impact.

Kealey said man has severe head and internal injuries.

It appears no one on the streetcar was injured.

Kealey said the curb separating a dedicated streetcar lane and the regular lane stops at the point where the crash happened.

He said the investigation is preliminary, but it appears the driver tried to make a left turn across the streetcar lane.

This is the second collision involving a streetcar in less than 24 hours.

A man was critically injured when he was hit by a streetcar on Queen Street near Broadview Avenue late Saturday night.

Police say the man was talking on his cell phone when the collision happened.
