A car crashed through a construction site at Union Station early Tuesday morning, dropping from street level onto a walkway usually saved for pedestrians.
Toronto police said the crash happened at about 2:40 a.m.
Police said the driver of a BMW got into an argument with another driver in downtown Toronto and a police officer told them both to pull over.
Both drivers took off and the BMW lost control, driving onto the sidewalk and through a barrier used to stop pedestrians from entering the construction site on Front Street, near Bay Street.
The car went over the edge and dipped into a large hole, which was connected to a below-street-level walkway between the subway and train sections of Union Station.
The driver and his four passengers ran from the crash scene, but they didn’t get far, police said. A security guard nabbed the driver nearby.
A tow truck was called to pull the damaged wreck out of the hole and remove it from the scene.
Workers at the scene Tuesday said it could have been a lot worse.
“Anything could have happened. They’re lucky there were no fatalities,” said construction worker Skylar Leal.
Police said the driver, a 22-year-old man, was taken into custody and was charged with breach of probation and dangerous driving.
