Police have charged a man with first-degree murder in connection to a daylight shooting in Little Italy that left one man dead and injured another.

Dean Wiwchar, 26, was arrested and charged in Toronto on Thursday afternoon.

The arrest came after John Raposo, 35, was shot in the head Monday afternoon on the patio of the Sicilian Sidewalk Café as he, and many others, gathered to watch a Euro Cup soccer match between Italy and Ireland.

Another man suffered non-life-threatening injures in the crossfire.

Police made their arrest Thursday near Dundas Street and Parliament Street, just east of downtown Toronto.

Witnesses said they saw undercover officers swarm a van taxi around 2:30 p.m.

"I heard a bunch of yelling and all these sirens and I could tell they were coming here, to this park," said one witness.

As many as 25 police officers, many in unmarked vehicles, gathered around the taxi and pulled out a tall, young, white man who was wearing a soccer jersey.

They arrested the man without incident.

Homicide Det. Terry Browne spoke to reporters Thursday evening, saying that the arrest was the result of co-operation between many different police forces, including those in York region and the RCMP.

"We've made a quick arrest on this, and that is a direct result of many, many police agencies who have been assisting us from the get-go with information that they have," said Browne.

Wiwchar allegedly had identification under a different name when he was arrested, Browne said.

There were four pieces of luggage and a shopping bag in the back seat of the taxi after the arrest was made.

Browne said a number of items were taken from the taxi during the arrest as potential evidence.

Police also took the taxi driver into custody for questioning.

Browne said Wiwchar was heading downtown at the time of his arrest.

Employees at the Aurora Retirement Centre confirmed that a taxi arrived to pick up a man named Dean Wiwchar shortly before police made their arrest.

Wiwchar's grandmother reportedly lives at the retirement home, north of Toronto, and his mother works there. A police source said they are looking into whether the suspect may have been hiding out at the retirement home before the arrest.

The arrest came as friends and family of the murdered man gathered on Bathurst Street, near Dundas Street, for a visitation before his funeral.

The gunman in the Little Italy shooting was dressed as a construction worker as he walked onto the patio and shot Raposo in the head at close range, wearing a reflective safety vest, a white hardhat and a white face mask.

Browne said the investigation into Raposo's murder is in its early stage, and said that members of the public and area businesses have played an important role in the investigation.

He could not say if there would be more charges to come.

"It will be a very lengthy investigation," Browne said. "I suspect we'll be speaking to, and looking at, other individuals as well."

Wiwchar will appear in a Toronto court Friday morning.
