A citizen and a police officer risked their lives to save residents trapped in an apartment fire in Toronto's east end early Tuesday morning.

Joseph Cilardi, who works in the area, and Const. Alex Greto, who was flagged down by neighbours, jumped into the thick black smoke and banged on doors, alerting residents to get out of the low-rise apartment building at 815 Kennedy Rd., north of Eglinton Avenue.

Cilardi and the building's superintendent also doused flames with an extinguisher until firefighters arrived shortly after the 9 a.m. fire erupted.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Afterwards, Cilardi downplayed his heroic effort.

"I was just in the right place at the right time, just doing my part to help," he told CTV's Jim Junkin.

The cause of the fire is not known, but officials said the damage is extensive.

Both Cilardi and Greto are likely to receive a citation.
