Ontario's police watchdog is involved in a case that left a 22-year-old Whitby man dead and a 13-month child in hospital with serious injuries.
Ontario's Special Investigations Unit says Durham Regional Police officers were called to a home Monday night and found a child suffering from at least one gunshot would.
The child was taken to Toronto's Sick Kids hospital and is expected to survive.
Andre Hogg, 22, was found dead at the scene. A post mortem is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
Sgt. Nancy VanRooy told The Canadian Press that police arrived at the home and at some point "shots were fired."
VanRooy said Durham police did not fire their weapons.
The SIU has they assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to the case.
The SIU probes cases in which a police officer is involved with a death or serious injury.
