A driver who was hospitalized after a high-speed crash on Highway 401 has been charged under the province's new anti-street racing legislation.
The man was driving about 180 kilometres per hour Sunday night before losing control of his car, which then rolled and straddled a median near the 401 and Dixon Road, OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley told CTV News.
"He was reported by witnesses at extremely high speeds, slaloming through traffic, when he lost control and slammed into the concrete wall," said Woolley. "He has been charged with dangerous driving under the Criminal Code and also charged under street racing legislation."
The highway was shut down shortly after 7:30 p.m. Sunday night while crews removed the wreckage.
The driver suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The charges were among dozens laid over the weekend using laws meant to prevent street racing. Police say 57 people were arrested in the Toronto area.
