Hamilton police cracked down on a major downtown drug trafficking ring this week, arresting 52 people and seizing more than $800,000 in illicit drugs.

The two-week project ended in 124 charges, police said on Thursday, all stemming from the sale of marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamine in the city's downtown core.

Between September 13 and 19, officers targeted crack houses and street-level dealers.

Undercover operations by the Hamilton Police Vice and Drug Unit resulted in 18 drug warrants executed across the city. All warrants tied back to downtown drug trafficking, police said.

"Targeting this type of crime is a key priority for Hamilton Police and one that will see a positive impact in the reduction of violent crimes and property crimes in our City," Police Chief Glenn De Caire said in a statement. "Our focus on street-level drug traffickers can and will improve quality of life for citizens."

Police seized $775,000 worth of marijuana, $28,000 worth of cocaine, $20,000 worth of crack cocaine and $51,000 of methamphetamine.
