Halton Region police have intercepted an $8-million cocaine shipment that was hidden in a load of vegetables in the back of a tractor trailer.

A transportation ministry officer became suspicious when he arrived to settle a traffic dispute between the driver of the trailer and a motorist on Highway 401 in Milton last weekend.

The officer called police, who discovered more than 205 kilograms of cocaine in the produce shipment.

The narcotics seizure is Halton's largest ever.

"This is a sober reminder ... of what could pass through our communities on a daily basis," Insp. Chris Perkins said a news conference in Oakville on Wednesday.

"What you see here represents a lot of potential criminal activity."

Investigators are still trying to determine where the drugs were coming from and where they were heading.

The driver of the rig, 39-year-old Avtar Sandu, of Brampton, was arrested and faces a charge of trafficking cocaine.

Police said the driver of the car had nothing to do with the drugs.

Detectives are continuing their investigation. Police believe the shipment could be connected to a larger drug ring.
