MILTON, Ont. - A trial of former Ontario cabinet minister John Snobelen on gun charges has been put over until Feb. 26.

The decision was made this morning in a Toronto court. Snobolen did not appear and was represented by his lawyer.

The charges stem from a search at a house in Milton, Ont. on Jan. 9 where police seized a Colt .22-calibre semi-automatic pistol and ammunition.

Snobelen was charged with careless storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and unlawful acquisition of a firearm. He turned himself in to Halton regional police on Jan. 12 and was later released.

Snobelen, 52, was the province's education minister under Mike Harris's Conservative government from June 1995 until October 1997.

The high school dropout later served as minister of natural resources but was dropped from cabinet when Ernie Eves succeeded Harris as premier in 2002.
