TORONTO - A central Ontario man charged after being stopped with a loaded crossbow in his vehicle a few blocks from the G20 summit site has been acquitted.

Gary McCullough of Haliburton was detained and charged with weapons dangerous by Toronto police in June 2010, two days before the summit.

McCullough said he carried the crossbow with him to keep it away from a thieving neighbour who had broken into his car, smashing the front passenger window.

McCullough said he was in Toronto to get the window fixed because service in the GTA is faster than in cottage country.

The judge acquitted McCullough saying the Crown failed to prove he planned to use the weapon.

A judge ruled earlier this year that police breached McCullough's constitutional rights by questioning him before giving him a chance to see a lawyer.
