Toronto police are investigating after an 11-year-old girl said a man and woman tried to abduct her from her west-end school as classes were letting out for the day on Tuesday.

The girl told school staff the pair tried to force her into a van, but she managed to escape, suffering minor scrapes.

The student said she saw five guns and two knives attached to the roof of the van before she was able to get away and head back inside Dixon Grove Junior Middle School at 315 The Westway.

The girl also said the man was wearing a mask, while the female passenger had red, curly hair.

Det. Dan Sova said the couple fled in a dark-coloured van. They were last spotted heading west on The Westway.

Just a day earlier, a man tried to abduct a five-year-old boy from his mother's grip near at a west-end school.

The suspect allegedly threatened to kill the boy, but the mother grabbed her son and got him to safety. The child was not hurt.

School principal Flora Cifelli and another teacher followed the boy's assailant down the street until police arrived.

A 52-year-old man was arrested and taken to the 31 Division police station. He was charged with assault and threatening death.

Police were expected to ask the courts for a psychiatric examination of the suspect.
