A woman who helped a gunman escape after a fatal shooting outside a Toronto community centre in 2013 was sentenced on Friday for being an accessory after the fact to murder.
Kashana Duncan was handed a two-year prison sentence for her involvement in the 2013 shooting outside the North Kipling Community Centre. Police said Neeko Mitchell, 25, was ambushed outside the west-end building during a community basketball tournament. He was shot eight times and later died of his injuries.
His alleged killer, Reshane Hayles-Wilson of Mississauga, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in September 2014. According to police, Duncan -- who was grazed by a bullet during the targeted shooting -- was the getaway driver.
At the time of the murder, Duncan was believed to be a low-ranking member of the Monstarz Street Gang, a mid-level, Toronto-based group.
The gang is the same one that was targeted by police earlier this year during a months-long investigation called Project Pharaoh that resulted in 50 search warrants being carried out in an area spanning from Barrie to Hamilton.
According to police in June, members of the gang have been involved in 44 recorded incidents of violence in and around the Rexdale area since May 2011.
Duncan is believed to know the alleged leader of the Monstarz gang, Jermaine Dunkley. She appeared in a rap video with Dunkley that was submitted as evidence.
With credit for time served, Duncan has four months left in her sentence. The alleged shooter in the 2013 homicide, Hayles-Wilson, is awaiting trial and the investigation into the murder continues.
