The morning after a lengthy Gardiner Expressway closure, police said there were nine collisions in less than two hours.
Between 6 and 8 a.m., Toronto Police Const. Clint Stibbe told CTV Toronto there were nine collisions on a stretch of the expressway between Park Lawn Road and the Don Valley Parkway.
The crashes came after the high-traffic roadway was closed over the weekend for spring repairs.
The highway was reopened late Sunday morning, but the city is warning commuters of further delays over the coming months as major upgrades begin.
Among the upgrades, the ramp from Windermere Avenue to the westbound Gardiner will remain closed until early Tuesday morning.
Additionally, a series of overnight closures will affect the eastbound lanes between Carlaw and the Humber River.
City crews will be working to replace the deck on the elevated portion of the highway from CNE to Grand Magazine Street.
There are also plans to demolish the Garrison Road bridge east of Strachan Avenue. One lane will be closed in each direction of the Gardiner and construction is expected to be complete in December 2016.
Other major projects include bridge upgrades in the Humber River and Park Lawn Avenue area and the replacement of a median west of Dufferin Street. That work is expected to finish in December.
